Banned same-sex marriage by statute in 1996. Superior Court judge ruled in Brause v Alaska on February 27, 1998 that Alaska must show a compelling state interest why Jay Brause and Gene Dugan can not be issued a marriage licence.
On May 11, 1998 the Alaska legislature places a constitutional amendment on the November 1998 ballot to prevent a same-sex marriage ruling by the State Supreme Court. The ballot was approved.
