Using Site Maker

Site Maker is the tool you should use when you want to create or modify web pages other than your site's home page.

To create a new page:

  1. Click the New Page button. You will go to the first step in the process, Title and Name Your Page. All you need to do is follow the instructions on each page and you will be taken step-by-step through the web page building process.

After you have created a page, you can return to Site Maker either to make changes or to create additional pages. Every page you create will appear in the window on this page.

To make changes to an existing page:

  1. Select the page you want to change in the window.

  2. Click one of the buttons:

Edit: This will take you to the Edit Page tool, where you can make changes to elements or add new elements to your page.

Preview: View the selected page as it will appear to visitors to your site.

Rename: A pop-up window will appear. Type in the new name and click OK.

Copy: This makes a copy of the selected page. A pop-up window will appear. Type in a new name and click OK.

Set Default: This makes the selected page the default home page for your site. The default home page is the first page a visitor will see when they go to your web address.

Note: If you have imported a page named index.html or default.html via File Manager, or if you have renamed any page to one of these names in File Manager, that page will "override" the default home page that is indicated with an asterisk in Site Maker. You can rename the pages in File Manager if necessary.

Delete: This will permanently delete your page. Once you delete a page, you cannot revert to a version previously saved on Site Central.

Title and Name Your Page

Page Title: The page title is an important part of your web page, even though it appears only in the top bar on the browser and in bookmark menus. Often, you see the title of a page before visiting the web site (such as in a search engine result that lists sites by title), so it is important to pick a good title that describes your page.

Pagename: Choose a short, descriptive pagename that includes no spaces or special characters. In the Site Maker tool, you use pagenames to identify and work with the pages on your site. Also, you use pagenames when referring to the web addresses of your pages:
Example: http://sitemaker.netscape.com/emily/home (home is the pagename)

  1. Type the title into the Title text box.

  2. Type a pagename into the Pagename text box.

  3. Click Continue. You will go to the Choose Page Design screen.

Choose Page Design

To begin designing your page, first choose whether to start with a blank page or use our ready-made sample pages as templates.

To use a sample page as a template, just choose the type of page you are creating (personal or business) and select a design from the scrolling menu. You can make changes to the page after you select it.

  1. Select Personal Sample Page, Business Sample Page, or Blank Page, according to your needs. The scrolling menu below displays the different design sample pages of the type you selected.

  2. Select a specific sample page from the scrolling menu.

  3. Click Select.

Tip: When choosing a sample page, make sure that you consider the number of columns that you would like to have in your page. For example, if you want your page to have three columns, make sure to choose a sample that has three columns. After you choose a sample page, you cannot change the number of columns in the page.

Also, when deciding how many columns you want in your page, consider the type of content that you will place on the page. For example, if your page includes large photos, you probably don't want to use a three-column format, because the columns would be too narrow to accommodate a wide photo; a 1-column design would be more appropriate. If your page will have a lot of text, consider using a three-column format, because narrower columns are somewhat easier to read.
